The Way It Is

NCS: Things are different here.

Jamaica: A Memorable Experience

Last week, a couple of our high school students went to Jamaica as part of an RUF ministry team. Many of them had experiences that have changed lives (and not only theirs). I got to interview Bruce Elder and Casey Boyte about their trip. Casey:  Q: How was Jamaica? A: Jamaica was awesome! Q:What did you do there? A: We visited a few different schools and shared Bible lessons with the kids. It was kind of like a Good News Club. We had songs, memory verses, and lessons. Q: Where in Jamaica were you? A: We stayed at the Montego Bay Campus of the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD). Q:... Read→

Facebook Etiquette

What exactly is etiquette? Well, according to dictionary.com, etiquette is “the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.” Etiquette is blending in with the people around you. You may be wondering, ‘What does Facebook have to do with this?” I find that many people today on Facebook are getting called out for being immature or annoying. If you have or want a Facebook and don’t want to appear as “that person who always bugs me on Facebook,” then I have some tips for you. First of all, to avoid being awkward, do not comment on... Read→

Status Update: Companies are Checking my Facebook

Some companies are searching employee Facebook accounts. Image source http://img.gawkerassets.com/ img/17hsd95u5ae57jpg/ original.jpg Have you ever applied for a job and been turned down? It could be because that company checked your Twitter, Facebook, or blog. Some companies are requiring you to friend them on Facebook and some can just go to your page if you do not have proper privacy settings. They are looking for other jobs you have had, and what’s going on in your life. It may be hard to believe but a senior manager for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission noted that approximately... Read→

Historical changes for the elementary curriculum

The Roman Forum (Image by Lori Ramey) Learning is changing in the lower grades. Mrs. Spearman, a founding member of the curriculum committee at NCS, has been working on the elementary-level history and Bible curriculum to provide better consistency within each grade’s Bible and History content for each year. She and Mr Ramey worked to develop a 4 year cycle of integrated Bible and history: the 3rd-6th graders now study history from creation through modern history within that cycle, which repeats again in the high school. The committee felt these changes fit with the classical framework of the... Read→

The next generation of textbooks

New Covenant is a cutting edge school. We teach classical education in an environment that encourages students to think on their feet and be creative. There are advantages to having smaller classes at a school like New Covenant, one of them being the ability to integrate technology into education. Here at New Covenant we have the opportunity to be at the forefront of the technological expansion we are experiencing in this decade. The ability to engage a student is so important and a new, innovative way to do this is with the use of iPads as textbooks. In print textbooks there are diagrams and pictures,... Read→

Students Tackle Local Poverty Issues

NCS students from grades 7-12th took time during the Service Week to clear a field of rocks at Calvary Home, while other kids stocked and organized the pantry. The Service Week, which took place October 17-21st,  was an entire week of school primarily planned by Mr. Knipe for the 6th through 12th graders to learn about and help those in poverty. The students were given a chance to step in the shoes of the less fortunate and see how it really is for them. Students were divided into “families” of 5 or 6 people to do activities that taught us about the effects of poverty, like walking... Read→

There are so many little conflicts this year particularly, but the two that I am focusing on deal with advertisement. First of all, the logo for London 2012 has been a big issue. There was a advertisement video put up on the website in 2007, with the logo,... Read→

We don’t have much longer until summer where we can sleep in and be bored for the rest of the day, but there are many ways to keep yourself occupied. You may say that you don’t have anything to do or I don’t have a car to go do things out of the house…. Well one thing to do to avoid boredom is summer programs. Summer programs don’t have to be those collage professor lecture things, but they can if that’s what you like. There are a lot of summer programs that are really... Read→

Now I have heard and assume many of you have also heard about the recent issue of the quality of the food being served to children in public school.   This is a very big deal and though some schools are dealing with it, many are not. But here’s the catch: the children must pick the fresh food instead of French fries and The 6th graders tried some legit Cornish pasties at lunch in the fall, as part of a unit on Robin Hood. dessert.   Now... Read→
