The Way It Is

NCS: Things are different here.

Is your lunch as healthy as you think?

What kinds of food do you eat and enjoy the most? Fun food? Fresh food? Fatty food? Healthy food? Well, did you know that 50% of the students in American schools are obese? Almost every child consumes over 1800 calories per day. For an average person who’s in shape and that eats right, the number of calories they consume can drop as low as 1000. Public schools typically serve cheaper foods to keep costs down during tough economic times, and unfortunately cheap does not mean healthy. In most private schools, during the week the students can bring whatever kind of food they want. Here at NCS, on... Read→

The next generation of textbooks

New Covenant is a cutting edge school. We teach classical education in an environment that encourages students to think on their feet and be creative. There are advantages to having smaller classes at a school like New Covenant, one of them being the ability to integrate technology into education. Here at New Covenant we have the opportunity to be at the forefront of the technological expansion we are experiencing in this decade. The ability to engage a student is so important and a new, innovative way to do this is with the use of iPads as textbooks. In print textbooks there are diagrams and pictures,... Read→

Tailgating with Perry Tuttle

The “Southern Safari” is the year’s largest fundraiser for New Covenant School.  Last year, the event raised nearly $20,000. This year’s Southern Safari will be held on Friday, February 24th at 6 p.m. at New Covenant School. In this fifth year of the event, the theme of the Safari is “Tailgating with Perry Tuttle.”  Perry Tuttle was a wide receiver on the 1981 Clemson University National Championship football team. He went on to play professional football.  Perry Tuttle is now a noted author, speaker, coach, and... Read→

Barbie Beauty?

She's all-American, but is Barbie offering girls a healthy ideal of "beauty"? Everyone has seen or heard of a Barbie doll. This doll is made of plastic and is very skinny, and fairly tall. Young girls all over the world play with these dolls. Barbies are often thought of as friends, but too often girls and women try to be Barbie. Barbie dolls have an image of beauty that girls see and often try to repeat. That image can be dangerous and destructive. How This Image Affects Girls Statistics show that the “Barbie body type” is likely to occur in one out of every one hundred thousand... Read→

Taking A Gamble

Mrs Gamble shares a story with eager kindergarteners I interviewed Mrs. Gamble, our amazing kindergarten teacher. She has taught here for a really long time, and must have some kind of amazing superpower to be able to keep those kids attention.   I wanted to get a better understanding of her teaching experience and a little bit of her life outside of school.  This is what I learned. Q: How long have you been teaching? A: 30 years. Q: Have you taught at any other school? A: Yes. I did 20 years in public school. I have taught in Abbeville, Belton, and Andederson. Q: Where did you go to college?... Read→

Students Tackle Local Poverty Issues

NCS students from grades 7-12th took time during the Service Week to clear a field of rocks at Calvary Home, while other kids stocked and organized the pantry. The Service Week, which took place October 17-21st,  was an entire week of school primarily planned by Mr. Knipe for the 6th through 12th graders to learn about and help those in poverty. The students were given a chance to step in the shoes of the less fortunate and see how it really is for them. Students were divided into “families” of 5 or 6 people to do activities that taught us about the effects of poverty, like walking... Read→

What Happened to Art?

Imagine all of your creativity being wasted in the back of your brain behind stacks of textbooks and bottles of White Out, never achieving a path to escape. Well, you don’t have to imagine that hard because it’s closer to reality than you would think. Many–if not all of us–students have noticed the unfortunate lack of an art program at New Covenant School this year. The current economy has stripped us of our education’s shoes (a.k.a. art). NCS had to cut its art program in August in order to meet our budget. I believe that the artistic aspect of a student’s education is very... Read→

Learning is changing in the lower grades. Mrs. Spearman, a founding member of the curriculum committee at NCS, has been working on the elementary-level history and Bible curriculum to provide better consistency within each grade’s Bible and History content for each year. She and Mr Ramey worked to develop a 4 year cycle of integrated Bible and history: the 3rd-6th graders now study history from creation through modern history within that cycle, which repeats again in the high school. The committee... Read→

Witness by Karen Hesse is a book about the Ku Klux Klan moving into a small town in Vermont in the 1920’s. It was published in 2001 by Scholastic. When I fist saw this book I thought, “Hey this looks good. Let’s give it a try.” This novel has a very interesting structure and great characters. The Ku Klux Klan is a group of people dressed in white robes with tall caps. Whenever they got the chance, they killed people from different racial groups. So, every people group other than whites were... Read→

Inherit the Wind is a popular play on college campuses Inherit the Wind is the book version of a play loosely related to the Scopes Monkey Trial. Like the real trial, the book deals with a man on trial for breaking the law by teaching evolution. It had the same idea but different names for the characters and a different setting. It was written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. These men were both playwrights by profession and teenagers during the Scopes Monkey Trial. They decided to write this... Read→

I read Tree by Leaf by Cynthia Voigt, published by Atheneum in 1988. My first overall impression was I expected to like it more. By reading the inside cover, It sounded like an overall good book. But, I was disappointed. There were many things I did not enjoy in this book. I thought it would be a interesting, historical fiction book. My attitude towards this book is negative. Don’t get me wrong, I usually like all the books I read but, this is a exception. It was a bad read. My first reason for... Read→

Have you ever wondered why you’re learning something you don’t think you’ll use in the future? Yeah, me too. But what would happen when you needed those skills but didn’t stay in school long enough to learn them? An actual pile of tests (yet to be graded) found on the desk of a teacher at NCS! *whew* Education. What’s gone wrong with it?   Drop-out rates increasing, students learning things they won’t use, degrees going to waste with the ever present problem known as the American... Read→
