The Way It Is

NCS: Things are different here.

Mrs Gamble

Mrs Gamble shares a story with eager kindergarteners

I interviewed Mrs. Gamble, our amazing kindergarten teacher. She has taught here for a really long time, and must have some kind of amazing superpower to be able to keep those kids attention.   I wanted to get a better understanding of her teaching experience and a little bit of her life outside of school.  This is what I learned.

Q: How long have you been teaching?

A: 30 years.

Q: Have you taught at any other school?

A: Yes. I did 20 years in public school. I have taught in Abbeville, Belton, and Andederson.

Q: Where did you go to college? What did you study?

A: I went to Erskine College and I studied elementary education, early childhood education, and special education.

Q: What is your favorite part about teaching?

A: Being able to teach little kids to read.  Also, the funny things they say, ‘cause your NEVER know what they’re gunna say and its always funny.  The hardest part is not laughing.

Q: What other grades have you taught?

Q: K4, K5, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and special ed., which is working with special needs children.

Q: Do you have any hobbies outside of school?

A: Yes. Crafts, reading, and gardening.

Q: How did you meet your husband?

A: In college, at Erskine.

Q: Do you have any children?

A: Yes, I have a son, Caleb, and a daughter, Haley who just got married in September.

Q: What do your children do?

A: Caleb works in Greenville for the forensics department, but it’s not like C.S.I. He will be the first one to tell you.  Haley has just graduated and is going back in January to get her nursing degree.

Q: What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you while teaching?

A: O.K, I’m gonna tell you this amazing story. There’s no way you will believe it but I promise it really happened.   I had a little boy in K5 who got his head stuck in the back of a chair. The chair had metal bars running down the back and they were spaced just far enough apart for him to stick his head in there. (They don’t make them like that anymore for this reason I’m sure) but, I couldn’t get him out, no one could get him out! Then he got scared and because he got scared his body stared swelling so he got even more stuck. So they had to call the fire department and bring them in and they came running down the hall, paramedics were with them. They got in the room and saw the tiny piece of plastic and they couldn’t cut it! So they had to call backup with the Jaws of Life and finally get him out. It wasn’t funny then but once they got him out and he was O.K.  That’s pretty good.
Mrs. Gamble really knows what she’s doing with all the things that she’s teaching.  She does a great job of juggling her teaching career and keeping time for hobbies enjoys. Mrs. Gamble’s job may not exactly qualify as a dangerous job, but it sure is more than I could handle on a daily basis.
